2020 Mid-Atlantic Flute Convention
I’m here in Washington D.C. to perform with Jasmine Choi at the 2020 Mid-Atlantic Flute Convention, presented by The Flute Society of Washington. The last time I attended a flute convention was several years ago at one of the national conventions, when I was exhibiting for AirTurn. As big as the national convention was, I’m really impressed with how big this one is as well! Of course, as a former exhibitor, I just had to check out the exhibit hall and take the temperature of the level of commerce, which is critical to helping sustain the arts.
One of the best things about flute conventions is the opportunity to make new friends and to catch up with old ones! I’m looking forward to spending some more time interviewing composer Daniel Dorff, who is a major contributor to the flute and piccolo literature and was exhibiting his collection of compositions. And it was so wonderful meeting up with Laurie Sokoloff, former piccolo player of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and daughter of my piano teacher Eleanor Sokoloff, as well as Sharon Byer, Director of the Columbia Flute Choir and a loyal early supporter of AirTurn during its early days!
