Imitating Rubinstein on a 1905 Steinway Model B Grand Piano

A few weeks ago, we released a video about a 1905 Steinway Model B piano that we recently restored. Needless to say, that video generated a lot of interest! One of our clients expressed an interest in the piano, so to help demonstrate its full tonal capabilities, we enlisted the help of one of our master technicians to voice the hammers to make it sound as close to Arthur Rubinstein’s legendary recording of Chopin’s Nocturne in E-flat major, Op. 9 No. 2, as possible. Now, I’m no Rubinstein, but after carefully studying his playing style, I give it my best attempt to emulate his inimitable artistry. As a special bonus, I demonstrate how a Yamaha Disklavier can be used to accompany myself on an excerpt from Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor, Op. 23. Using the Disklavier’s record function, I was able to quickly lay down the orchestra part and have it play back instantly. This is a fantastic way to learn how to be both a better soloist and collaborative pianist!
